The Joys of Series of Books
Aug 22nd, 2008 by Arkmulebarn
I seem to be reading a lot of series lately. At least that is what it seems like to me.
Actually, I rather enjoy good series. Characters I enjoy spending time with, learning about and sharing (their) experiences are a rare pleasure. An author who can write compelling stories that make me want to pick up the book and settle down for a very long read is even rarer.
Years ago I used to have a list of about 4 that I did not wait until the latest came out in paperback, I spent the big bucks buying the hardback version. Sadly, that list has dwindled into almost non existence anymore and not just because of the cost of books.
The Potter series has run its course and while there will be a new addition with the release of The Tales of Beedle the Bard on December 4, 2008, I’m still not sure I will be adding to my collection. (Yeah, sure!)
The latest installment of Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance series is due in September, but I find that I prefer to listen to audio and I won’t be buying either the book or the CD. The library copy will suffice just fine.
The next addition to Gabaldon’s Outlander series isn’t due to hit the stands until 2009 (est.) and, no, I won’t be waiting for that one to come out in paperback.
Jim Butcher writes great fantasy fiction and I am enjoying the Codex Alera series very much. So much, in fact, that I am contemplating not waiting for the paperback version. (Where’s that library list?) If I can find the Dresden Files series at the library, I may be in heaven!
But, to get back to my original thought, series characters almost become like friends or family. There is a history that the reader shares with the character, a knowledge that is almost like reviewing the family history. Share knowledge that is like sitting down with long lost friends in a rainy afternoon to share great food and lots of catching up.
Treasures, yes?
